Play pilot as you explore flight innovations, starting with the Wright brothers' achievements, or make yourself at home inside Buckminster Fuller’s circular Dymaxion House. Put yourself in the place of the movers and shakers who blazed the trail to where we stand today. And in doing so, discover your own path.
Cranbrook Art Museum is situated on a lush, 319-acre campus of world-renowned architecture, sculpture, and gardens. Described by architecture critic Wolf von Eckardt as “the most enchanted and enchanting setting in America,” in 1989 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Art Museum features year-round, changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and design, as well as guided tours of the Collections Wing, showcasing our collection of nearly 6,000 artworks. From May to November, book a tour of Saarinen House—our campus’s Art Deco historic home—and Frank Lloyd Wright’s nearby Smith House, which Wright called “my little gem.”
School teachers Sara Stein Smith and Melvyn Maxwell Smith, undeterred by their modest salaries and guided by a shared love of architecture, met Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin in 1941 and commissioned a custom home. The Smith House in Bloomfield Township is an excellent example of Wright’s Usonian ideal, which aimed to build quality houses for the American middle class.
Tours offer a unique view of this special home, its landscape, and the story of a couple whose vision and determination allowed them to achieve their dream. The tour begins at Smith House: 5045 Ponvalley Road, Bloomfield Township, Michigan 48302. Reservations are required in advance. Advance ticket sales for each weekend close Friday at 10:00am. After 10:00am on Friday and on Saturday and Sunday, if a tour is not sold out, tickets may be purchased at Cranbrook Art Museum from 11:00am - 1:00pm.
